During my BA in Dance & Related Arts at Chichester University, I started offering Argentine Tango classes because my choreography and dance teacher, Dale Thompson, said during a class: "If you really want to know something, teach it!" The classes attracted a nice group of enthusiasts, as there was very little Tango in the area in 1999 (about an hour drive from Chichester, there were some tango classes at Tracie's Club in Southampton, and Carola's classes in Brighton). I taught both lead and follow roles on my own, and I am doing this to this very day! During the evening classes, I would incorporate exercises from techniques I studied in the morning, such as Skinner Release Technique, Contact Improvisation, Cunningham Technique, etc... The students often requested those exercises as they provided a gentle and effective warm-up which eased them into the walking in partnership.
After graduating, I immersed myself in Dance4Camera and New Technologies, started learning Japanese Butoh and performed and devised my own works.
I have never been a full-time tango teacher/performer; that -for some reason- has never been my interest. However, since 2016, I have been teaching Argentine Tango at the City Lit Institute near Holborn (London). I have occasionally provided cover to the existing teacher and when the position became vacant it was offered to me. I immensely enjoy being part of this iconic Institute - they have thousands of fantastic courses!
Please see below for information on the upcoming courses.
Lastly, I share a video from a 2006 tango performance at the Royal Opera House's Floral Hall, a few minutes from the City Lit. The first legs you see are mine!
